Session - SWAGamers S04E08 (Lords of Waterdeep, Glass Road)

26th August 2017 (Saturday)

Game(s) Played:

Welcome back to this month's gaming session report on the SWAGamers, where we intrepid few embark on a quest to gain the most Victory Points as the great Lords of Waterdeep followed by a quiet late morning blowing glass and making bricks on the Glass Road.

Session – Lords of Waterdeep

Game: Lords of Waterdeep
Designer: Peter Lee, Rodney Thompson
Players: 2 – 5 Players
Playing Time: 120 minutes (This Play: 90 minutes)
Main Mechanisms: Worker Placement

Player(s):

This is my first outing as a Lord of Waterdeep and the intrigue, deceit and backstabbing already started before the first turn even began. I took a break to send the children off only to return to find Moses sitting in my spot for some reason. It would appear that the color black brings out the color of his eyes. So we swapped Lords and starting Intrigue cards and then Moses realizes that by taking my spot he starts last. Attempts to backtrack and re-swap were met with "Shut up boy! If you win this game anyway I'm so going to hit you." Remember this bit for *spoilers* foreshadowing.

Foreshadowing somehow carries a negative connotation to it

Lords of Waterdeep with 5 Players makes the game move fast because you more or less get only two moves per turn. On the down side, there's little in the way of planning and way more jostling, either up front through blocking of action spaces or the playing of Intrigue cards. This is where I failed spectacularly because I was too focused on the action spaces when I should have been like the others and fallen back to the use of Intrigue Cards to grab Cubes / VPs that I needed instead.

Witness the healthy camaraderie and jolly backslapping that boardgames can bring

My mistakes aside, it seemed that a good idea was to complete smaller quests to get cube benefits in order to complete bigger 40 VP quests, rather than slowly build towards the 40 VP quest whilst getting assaulted by Mandatory Quests and robbery via Intrigue Cards.

Results Of Game(s)

End foreshadowing sequence… Damn that crazy lead at the last few turns

Winner – Moses (159 VPs)
Second – Edward (130 VPs)
Third – Sean (124 VPs)
Fourth – Gideon (118 VPs)
LAST – Justin (109 VPs)

Well at least we all broke 100 VPs, although it seems amazing that the City Guards faction managed to beat the Harpers, Silverstars, Knights of the Shield and the Red Sashes of Waterdeep. Then again, the City Guards of a city like Waterdeep must have Jedi Knight training of some sort to keep all these powerful lunatics in check.

And here we have our obligatory winner picture… Somehow the ones with Oeis in it are always the best (Ed: stupidest) ones.

I forgot to bop him in the head though

Session – Glass Road

Game: Glass Road
Designer: Uwe Rosenberg
Players: 1 – 4 Players
Playing Time: 75 minutes (This Play: 60 minutes)
Main Mechanisms: Role Selection, Tile Placement

Player(s):

After today's session I realized that Glass Road is a really, really great game for 4 Players. Better still, today I had a little assistant to help me. It was actually an interesting way to teach the game by pointing out what buildings we are aiming for and what Actions we need to take to get the resources necessary to build what we want. Naturally Edward saw no reason not to take advantage of the open information coming out of my mouth even though he was playing against his son. Parenting by throwing eaglets out of the nest.

My wonderfully, cheeky assistant

Surprisingly there were many rounds where everyone seemed to be able to play all 5 Specialist cards each round. It was as if everyone was suddenly psychic. I guess my instructions to my assistant of "We need wood, coal and food" were not subtle enough.

The psychics around the table

Our little factory of glass and brick making

Here you see the final work of me and my little assistant, we were aiming for lots of VPs from having lots of water. Unfortunately we were one turn shy of being able to play the Water Carrier which would have given us an additional 12 VPs (instead of the present 0 VPs) and given us the win. Boo hoo hoo.

Results Of Game(s)

Enter the Sandman

Winner – Henry (18 VPs)
Second – Edward (16 VPs)
Third – Sean (15 VPs)
LAST – Justin (14.5 VPs)

So I took out the upgraded Forest Glassworks & Brotherhood of the Masons but totally forgot the Glassmaker's Village, which literally gave Henry 7 VPs. And so my theory that the upgraded versions of the start buildings usually give someone the win when built unfortunately still stands.

And here is our winner picture, it's okay, Henry's shy.

And that's all for our meet up this month, September is always naturally a busy month of the year because of all the birthday celebrations but I'm sure we'll be able to sneak in another session before the month is up.

Until next time, keep calm and play better.
