Session - SWAGamers S05E04 (Majesty, Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game)

14th April 2018 (Saturday)

Game(s) Played:

To commemorate the arrival of Avengers: Infinity War, we decided to actually play Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game taking on Thanos, the Mad Titan himself.

Session – Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game

Game: Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game
Designer: Devin Low
Players: 1 – 5 Players
Playing Time: 45 minutes (This Play: 90 minutes)
Main Mechanisms: Deck Building

Player(s):

Gideon decided that we should be thematic about the whole affair and only pick heroes from the Avengers team. So we picked Superior Iron Man, The Winter Soldier, The Hulk, Thor Odinson & Black Panther. With no small amount of trepidation since we were facing Thanos after all, we set forth to defeat our enemy.

Edward picked Superior Iron Man & The Winter Soldier to create a really good card drawing engine. Gideon eventually combined the same with some big Hulk cards whilst I decided to go power heavy with The Hulk, Thor Odinson & Black Panther.

Thanos basically stole Heroes that you had bought and the key to defeating him was to control the Infinity Gems which reduced his health

It is always fun when there is an evil win outcome for the heroes as well. In this case, if one of us could control 4 of the Infinity Gems, we would become evil and win the game

An example of one of the Infinity Gems which I controlled in the game

Infinity Gems are a bit harder to defeat because of their high health, but once you do it more or less spells the beginning of the end for Thanos. Not only do the Infinity Gems usually give the Player some sort of benefit but it reduces the health of Thanos as well. It is the Players' priority to control these Infinity Gems anyway since letting them escape or occupy too many spaces in the city spells the losing condition for the Players as well.

We were fortunate that many of the Scheme Twists came out in the early part of the game when none of us would have been able to defeat any Infinity Gems yet. Once we had managed to acquire a few Infinity Gems it seemed inevitable that we would defeat Thanos, it was just a question of how long it would take. I doubt if the Avengers would find it as easy in Avengers: Infinity War but I felt we were very wise to bring The Hulk along on this venture.

Results Of Game(s)

WINNER – Justin (35 VPs)
2nd – Edward (25 VPs)
3rd – Gideon (13 VPs)
LOSER – Thanos

We opted to do a round two against Thanos but using ONLY the Guardians of the Galaxy crew. We needed one more hero so we added the hero who gets around the most… Silver Surfer to the team. Now Silver Surfer is not a very good hero honestly and the Guardians don't really have any heavy hitters apart from Drax the Destroyer so this was a slow and steady slog of accumulating shards to power ourselves up and hit Thanos square in the jaw.

It feels weird that the colors are so different in the comic compared to the movie

An evil win seemed more likely because we really needed more Infinity Gems to be out to reduce Thanos' HP and Edward came quite close to being corrupted to the dark side. I inadvertently ended up in a king making role when I hit Thanos and the effect was for every other Player to discard all non-grey heroes in their hands, thereby disabling Gideon down to 2 cards for his turn and Edward, using all his available shards and card draw, thrashed Thanos once more for the game and the win.

Results Of Game(s)

WINNER – Edward (31 VPs)
2nd – Gideon (23 VPs)
3rd – Justin (17 VPs)
4th – Henry (8 VPs)
LOSER – Thanos

Session – Majesty: For The Realm

Game: Majesty: For The Realm
Designer: Marc André
Players: 2 – 4 Players
Playing Time: 20 – 40 minutes (This Play: 30 minutes)
Main Mechanisms: Card Drafting, Set Collection

Player(s):

Edward had to go and since we only had about 30 minutes left I decided to give Majesty: For The Realm a try. I won't go into the details of how the game is played since that's available at many other resources, but let me just talk about some strategy and how the game feels. I wanted to take more photos but sadly my phone died right then, a side effect of being in a job that does not recognize out of office hours. So I will use some stock photos from bgg instead.

Henry favoured a Guardhouse | Barracks | Inn combo which gave him an average of 15 Coins for quite a few turns once he managed to capitalize on it. As a result of his and my Knights, the only one who took casualties was Gideon's citizens although he collected sufficient Witches to resurrect all his injured. I ended up playing the balancing factor between both Henry and Gideon, denying Henry a source of Guards to put a halt to his ridiculous combo and fighting with Gideon for the Queens. Such a strategy usually means I end up in last place.

Results Of Game(s)

Winner – Henry (208 Coins)
2nd – Gideon (200 Coins)
LAST – Justin (188 Coins)

So I kinda forgot to explain about the location majority scoring as well as the Y x Y locations scoring, something I myself forgot to focus on as well. Gideon could have won really since he would not have resurrected his final citizen to get 8 locations x 8 = 64 Coins, we calculated the differential to be a total of 12 Coins in the end which would have given him a 4 Coin victory over Henry. C'Est la vie.

Majesty: For The Realm shines best when the right citizen card comes up on the sushi belt and you have to look to your right, left, across and then yourself. So for more of these instances to occur, Majesty: For The Realm would therefore be best with the max number of Players.

I must say that I really, really, absolutely love the Coin tokens. So sue me.

It felt really, really good to have a 100% win rate in Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game today. And we were actually talking about why it felt so much easier today than usual, and our hypothesis is that MOSES WAS NOT PLAYING WITH US TODAY! Hahahahaha we've been making fun of him this whole month but IT IS TRUE! that he will stab the team in the back if it benefits him more. Well at least he's a reliable constant.

We also had a bit of an audience for our game of Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game since we were playing in McDonald's and a few kids came over to hover around the table and see what we were doing. Always interesting to see how people react to us gaming.

Until next time, keep calm and play better.
