Session - McBoardgamers S01E01 (Cluedo Suspect, 7 Wonders, Race For The Galaxy, For Sale)

11th of August 2013 (Sunday)

It is the Hari Raya Aidilfitri weekend and whilst the streets were clear of traffic and the food establishments bare of customers, we took the opportunity to hold the first official meeting of the McBoardgamers. Here’s the session report of it:

Game(s) Played:
Cluedo Suspect

7 Wonders

Race For The Galaxy

For Sale

Gideon, Clement & Matthew were already playing Cluedo Suspect when I arrived. I had not heard of this particular conversion of boardgame to cardgame by Hasbro but it does seem that Hasbro has a team talented at simplifying a game, maintaining the central theme and making it fun at the same time. At the prices these filler cardgames are going for, most of them are a steal at 20 ringgit and good for whiling the time away when you’re travelling.

Whilst waiting for them to finish, Jimmy & Louanna arrived and after a bit of discussion we decided to play a game of 7 Wonders which I would moderate. Newcomers to the game were Clement, Jimmy, Louanna, Henry & Matthew. Being relatively easy to teach, some Players still forgot the sage old advice of making sure you have enough Raw Material Cards from Age I because realizing this in Age III is a little too late. Still one of the best simultaneous turn boardgames I own, we managed to finish with Louanna emerging as the surprise winner (mostly from all the smackdown she handed to Jimmy & Henry for not having proper armies to defend themselves with).

I'm almost certain the guy on the other end of the picture took a picture of us with his phone whilst I was snapping this picture at the same time

Age II was really bad because I forgot to shuffle after showing everyone the green technology cards... Ooops

Results Of Game
I have everyone's score but am to lazy to go down and get it from the box... Louanna won and Gideon got second I think, mostly because their soldiers were buffer than everybody else's.

Gideon had to go off on an errand which brought us down to 5 Players (besides me) which was in a way ideal for Jimmy who wanted to play Race For The Galaxy. In hindsight, maybe I should've dissuaded Jimmy a little on RFTG which is by no means an easy game to grasp and requires a fair amount of plays to get an understanding of the basics, let alone having a strategy in mind for your first game. Thankfully Gideon came back soon enough to help me coach Clement & Matthew as I was recommending plays for all 5 Players each round. Note to self, complex games stay in the shelf unless all Players have read the rulebook or watched the Youtube tutorial lol.

Clement being very pleased that he got second

Results Of Game
Winna - Louanna (42 Victory Points)
2nd - Clement (34 Victory Points)
3rd - Henry & Matthew (28 Victory Points)
Dead Last - Jimmy (27 Victory Points)

Jimmy & Louanna had to go off for physical sports, leaving us to close the day with two rounds of For Sale. What can I say about For Sale that I have not already said? Great filler, ask to play it if you ever do come. We all went home with stitches in our side.

Here off picture you can see Clement barely being able to hold himself up

Results Of Game
Winna - Gideon ($53,000 / $62,000!)
2nd - Matthew ($56,000 / $56,000)
3rd - Clement ($47,000 / $57,000)
Dead Last - Mo ($50,000 / $50,000)

I have reviewed 7 Wonders & Race For The Galaxy in another post, do check them out if you want to know more about the games. Another good meetup although I'll work on the game selection for the next round.
