Whilst shifting our sessions to Saturday morning was really the only way for me to be able to slot in any time for boardgaming, the downside is that we are losing the younger crowd as they can't seem to get up any time before lunch. We did have two new people (Melanie & Simeon) join us this week so we played some boardgames that cater to newer boardgamers but are actually sometimes more fun.
Game(s) Played:
Session – Harbour
Player(s):
After finally having done a solo game (played against AI) & watching Watch It Played's cover of the game on YouTube, I was confident enough to teach how the game works. I picked the Fisherman as my character as the Carpenter's Guild was available & I could use the House of Weights & Standards to keep Fish & Wood at high market prices.
Unfortunately we had to put our game on hold indefinitely as Harbour only accommodates 4 Players and we had 6. Despite the short game, the first 10 - 15 minutes had my euro gaming blood pumping & I'm really looking to getting a full play through of the game some time at camp next week.
Thinking 7 Wonders would be too heavy to teach to new Players (plus some previous Players who have forgotten), I suggested we go back to King Of New York.

Memorable Comment(s)
Justin: Choose one character of the two
Gideon: I choose the Diplomat (I gave him the Diplomat for teaching purposes earlier)
Justin: Nope *takes the Diplomat away & give Gideon two new characters*
Gideon: Nooooo, whhhhyyyyy???
Session – King Of New York
Player(s):
The good thing about King Of New York is that the game is easy to teach & learn from watching a few Players take a turn before you.
Gideon giving a few pointers on which dice to keep, we're pretty sure the tips were advantageous to himself at the same time
Our game took slightly longer than usual as Players consistently entered & exited Manhattan when they got attacked. In the end, it was Gideon & Melanie who stuck to their guts & stayed an extra turn in Manhattan then attacking all the other Players in simultaneous turns (I'm calling this the Tandem Attack Strategy) to take out most of us, leaving Gideon, Melanie & myself alive (at one measly life).
Melanie took herself out through a skull roll & in my final fight with Gideon's Mantis, my Captain Fish decided to risk an extra turn in Manhattan but rolled poorly then Gideon pounces with two attacks for the win.
Time Taken: 60 minutes
Results Of Game(s)
Winna - Gideon
Rating: 8/10
We did see some of the more powerful bonus cards in play this round which made the game really interesting & gathering energy an actually viable action. Sadly I only managed to pick up Stomp (which gives me a free destroy building die each turn).
Session – Bohnanza
Player(s):
We haven't played Bohnanza in a while but it is nevertheless a really fun game so I thought we could give it a go. It ended up being so much fun that another patron had to actually ask us to keep it down.
Having said how much fun Bohnanza is, I find that a disclaimer is needed as Bohnanza simply promotes interaction between Players so the right kind of chemistry among your group of Players really helps to bump the fun levels. Letting your hair down is probably a good idea.
Time Taken: 30 minutes
Results Of Game(s)
Winna - Jimmy, Justin & Simeon (9 Coins)
Second - Louanna & Mo (8 Coins)
Third - Melanie (6 Coins)
Dead Last - Gideon (5 Coins)
Session – For Sale
Player(s):
For Sale is definitely my most played game in my collection, mainly because we rarely ever play a game without an immediate rematch game. I must someday ponder what the secret formula to its success is.
In our second game, I decided to test a theory that not placing a bid each round does not necessarily affect the outcome of my game (i.e. I won't be dead last). Surprisingly this theory was proven, and we suspect that this was due to Melanie sitting next to me. This led to some deep thoughts between us on how sitting order & Player inclinations are major inputs into a game of For Sale, this was probably the strangest experience I've had playing a game as simple as For Sale.
