Splinter "Karoke Kingu" tosses a gold coin up into the air, catching it as the coin twinkles down, an action accomplished unconsciously as she walks along beside Thalia "Heir Of Saint Traft" who is examining 'The Scepter' that they managed to purloin at the Shrine of the Depths.
"Maybe after we've banished 'The Voice', we could auction 'The Scepter' to the highest bidder", Splinter muses out loud. After pondering for a moment, Thalia hands over 'The Scepter' to Splinter, "Here, you better hold on to it." A little shocked, Splinter places 'The Scepter' in her pack, "I wasn't serious you know." Thalia faces forward as she replies, "I know. It's better to be in your hands in case something happens to me." Splinter is about to ask Thalia about her cryptic remark but bites it back at the look on Thalia's face. 'I'll know when I know' Splinter thinks to himself. "Come on" Thalia calls back to Thalia, "Let's see what all these other stuff we picked up can sell for" shaking a sack of clinking things at her side.
As dawn breaks at the tavern, a familiar voice cuts through the morning quiet, uncharacteristic because normally at this hour, you'd hear the Inox snoring and not shouting "MORE ALE!!! And when that traitorous little scamp of a Vermling shows up, I'll DROWN HIM IN ALE AS WELL!!!" Born of a life full of threats and predators around every corner, Splinter is up and out the window before the Inox's proclamation had even ended. Touching down on the ground, Splinter realizes Thalia has landed right next to him. "He's going to catch up for all the days he lost, so no adventuring for All Might 'The Symbol of Peace' for a while. Let's get out of town."
"You know, I feel like looking for ancient technology today" quips Thalia as the pair stand at the pier looking out to the Misty Sea. "We could check out that cove on the map we found" suggests Splinter. "Let's just grab a boat and see if we can find it, if we can't we'll just fish the rest of the day and call it a break" says Thalia with finality.
The opening leads into a narrow tunnel inclining upwards. Puddles of water line the floor, the result of waves crashing against the opening during high tide. "Great, looks like a pair of OOZEs have made their home here" mutters Splinter as his eyes shift to the heat seeking spectrum. Both Thalia and Splinter simultaneously unsheathe their daggers and burst towards the larger OOZE in the front. Splinter breathes out a spell of frost onto his dagger before launching it straight at the OOZE, as the projectile dagger connects, the OOZE is frozen for a second, giving Thalia the opening she needs to double thrust both daggers into the OOZE and spin around it, doing enough damage to kill the OOZE as she twists and pulls her daggers out of the dissolving goo.
The second OOZE launches itself at Thalia who jumps back a few feet to receive the OOZE's charge. With no enemy left to engage, Splinter looks away from the door at the end of the tunnel. He doesn't need to inspect the door to know that it is locked. Instead Splinter looks around for the trigger that would open the door, leaving Thalia to deal with the immature OOZE, a danger to most adventurers but not a Level 7 Scoundrel. A misshapen flat stone catches Splinter's eye, it's most likely a trap but appears to be the only way to make any further progress in this cavern.
It's always a trap, I have been well educated by the most sadistic DM in the universe and of course, Admiral Ackbar
Stuck frozen to the trigger stone, Splinter begins to chip away the ice as Thalia leaps into the room, summoning a SKELETON to flank the LIVING SPIRIT and ANCIENT ARTILLERY at the same time.
Splinter finally manages to break free and as he lifts his weight off the trigger stone, the metal doors start to swing shut. "There's got to be another trigger in the room you're in!" shouts Splinter at Thalia "See if you can find it!" Thalia finds the stone and stands on it, making the metal doors swing open, including the metal doors on the opposite wall! "Hurry and get your furry butt in here!" Splinter takes a running leap into the room breathes a cone of cold onto the ANCIENT ARTILLERY, freezing it before it can take aim. Turning to Thalia, Splinter says "What do we do?" fully expecting a horde of monsters to come pouring in through the newly opened doorway. "You still got that cloak?" Thalia asks. "Well you jump in to the next room and find the next trigger stone and I'll dismantle this ANCIENT ARTILLERY here"
In his carelessness, Splinter triggers a spike trap and holds his breath as he pulls the spike out of his foot
Hurting, trapped and cornered by a STONE GOLEM, OOZE and ANCIENT ARTILLERY, Splinter holds his breath as he looks for the next trigger stone, hoping his CLOAK OF INVISIBILITY doesn't fail him at an inopportune moment. Finding the stone, Splinter steps on it and two of the doors swing open, leaving one of the two new doors firmly shut. Thalia comes bursting into the room and Splinter quickly steps off the trigger stone to prevent the monsters from pouring in from the new room. In a furious melee, Thalia and Splinter manage to take down the monsters in the room. After the dust settles, Thalia and Splinter survive although they end up looking slightly worse for wear.
Looking at the trigger stone and closed metal door to the next chamber, Thalia and Splinter look at each other before simultaneously saying "One more time". Thalia steps on the trigger stone again whilst Splinter wraps the CLOAK OF INVISIBILITY around him one more time to enter the next chamber.
Tip toeing to the next trigger stone, Splinter steps on it again, only this time all the doors now swing open! Thalia, in the previous room, notices the previously shut door now swinging open and a treasure chest lies beyond. Shouting through the open doorway, "Change of plans!" Thalia wanders towards the sparkling treasure chest.
Only Splinter sees another treasure chest in the adjoining room, and he thinks 'Change of plans indeed' and sprints off towards the treasure chest, cutting off Thalia from his room as the metal doors swing shut. Opening the treasure chest, Splinter's eyes sparkle as he counts all of ten gold coins and hastily pockets it even as Thalia's hammering off the door echo loudly around the room. Tip toeing back to the trigger stone, Splinter's CLOAK OF INVISIBILITY finally fails as he takes a step on the trigger stone. The doors begin to open for Thalia and she opens her mouth to say "What took you so…", two LIVING SPIRITS and one ANCIENT ARTILLERY launch missiles at Splinter, wounding him grievously. Teetering on the brink of collapse, Splinter manages to collapse on the trigger stone, keeping his weight on it.
Seeing the trigger stone in the next room and the ANCIENT ARTILLERY focusing on her, Thalia takes a leap and lands on the stone
