Session - KFCgamers S01E09 (Magic: The Gathering)

20th of July 2014 (Sunday)

We had one of those days when a flood of people would suddenly show up out of the blue when we were only expecting four of us. Sadly we had already planned it to be Magic: The Gathering Draft Day, I had already prepared the "booster packs" (although I actually had to double back home 'cos I forgot the lands) enough for a 4 Player draft, so the rest sat down to one of our fan favourites, Smash Up. Now I understand why some boardgame hosts put a caveat on their events stating, "Please indicate your attendance or you may not have a table to join". So yea, do take note people, it isn't that we want to be exclusive but indicating in advance that you are coming helps us make the necessary preparations for you to have a better time. I won't be providing coverage for Smash Up since I actually didn't participate and was too busy drafting.

Session – Magic: The Gathering

Player(s):
Adrian (black / white)
Gideon (red / blue / green)
Justin (green / white)
Moses (red / blue)

We drafted with my playset of Avacyn Restored and not being able to kick the ingrained habit, I force drafted mono green at first. The good thing about it this time round is that my draws gave me plenty of green playables, then I splashed for white for lots of nifty abilities like lifelink, flying and vigilance.

Here we see the paranoid Mo reverse pile shuffling at Round 1 to hide his deck from view

[Round 1]

Well it turns out that Mo had built a red weenie mob of humans which turned out to consist of the following combo, consistently:

This gang swings for sixteen (usually lethal) damage

That Haunted Guardian of Adrian's really gave Mo some pain due to its first strike but he eventually swamped him to take the round 2 – 0

I didn't take any pictures of my games with Gideon, since I was too busy trying not to lose, which was a little surprising seeing how well I did in my later games. I lost mostly because I got burned and for some reason, none of my lifelink guys showed up in my two games with Gideon.

Thunderbolt & Thunderous Wrath anyone?

[Round 2]

My round with Adrian was ridiculous. We were still in our first game when Gideon & Moses finished their round (and they actually ended up playing 3 games because of a draw). Mostly because Adrian & I both had more than 25 life at one point. Adrian could have ended the stalemate earlier but it would not have been in his favour in any case. I just held out for the eventual win.

Here you can only see half of my ridiculous enchantment combo of Bower Passage & Builder's Blessing

Adrian ended up being mana screwed in Game 2 so this is what happened

[Round 3]

Round 3 saw me pitted against Moses which was kinda scary, until I pulled my Angelic Walls. Now safe from all the teenie weenie humans, I could build up my army and it looked something like this:

Flowering Lumberknot ended up being more useful than I thought

Technically I had already won but by some strange argument based on non-logic, Mo argued for a tie-breaker round. Lacking anything better to do......

[Round Tie-Breaker]

This looks good but if you take a closer look at Mo's combo...

Falkenrath Exterminator with enough counters on it can one shot anything and Ghostly Touch sure as heck helps it get there

Time Taken: 210 minutes

Results Of Game(s)
Round 1
Adrian – Mo (0 – 2)
Gideon – Justin (2 – 0)

Round 2
Adrian – Justin (0 – 2)
Gideon – Mo (2 – 1)

Round 3
Adrian – Gideon (1 – 2)
Justin – Mo (2 – 0)

Tie-Breaker
Justin – Mo (0 – 2)

Rating: 8/10

So here's what I learned, have more burn or destroy capabilities next draft or if you're going green, get more fatties.
