And we are TWO for TWO! Again thanks to Sean receiving all his Kickstarter games within the same month, we got to give the brand new Enchanters: Overlords a go.
Enchanters: Overlords is "a 2-4 players card-drafting fantasy game in which you and your friends??? forge unique Artifacts from dozens of Items and Spells. With them, you fight Monsters and compete to become the Hero of the Village." (Publisher: Gindie) So basically all you're doing throughout the game is forging your Artifact which is made of two parts: Item & Enchantment to kick monster butt. As you forge more and more Items & Enchantments into your Artifact, the old Items & Enchantments are not lost but leave effects imbued into your Artifact. The really fun part of this was how you can make really quirky combos because the Item & Enchantment complete the entire Artifact's name and flavour text. Oh heck, just see below to get what I mean.
This is my War Pick of Blindness! "Cracks skulls like rocks because it critically hits your enemies in the eyes" HOW COOL IS THAT?!?!?!
As you can see, the older Items are splayed upwards so that any effects at the bottom of the old Items are still added to the overall Artifact. And as Enchanters: Overlords is quite heavy on the take that aspect, there are many cards that allow you to screw with another Player's Artifacts by forcing them to rearrange the order of their Items / Enchantments or even discard them which can be quite painful.
I really, really, really wanted to put this in my Artifact because "… it stinks like a troll's underwear"!!! But it was only a so-so card in the late game
So I ended up being last in our first play through of Enchanters: Overlords. I was building up my Artifact to be able to take on big bad monsters as well as dragons and I was able to build a thing of beauty. The problem arose because winning a battle against these high powered monsters usually results in a nasty effect occurring, mostly effects which will screw up my perfectly built Artifact. So I ended up using my super powered Spade of Acid to bash low level Slimes. Another turning point is when I let Edward grab the Red Slime that heals damage (–VP at game end) instead of taking it for myself, which cost me a lot of points. In any case, here's my monster trophy haul at game end.
Results Of Game(s)
WINNER – Gideon (58 VPs)
2nd – Sean (57 VPs)
3rd – Edward (46 VPs)
LAST – Justin (44 VPs)
I haven't even covered the Overlords and Villages in Enchanters: Overlords but to me that felt more like just minor additional ways to get VPs. Even so, Enchanters: Overlords is a fun game to play, the cards were funny (I wish they had gone full out comic relief but that's just me), the take that was not eye gouging level intensive and just right at the poking level and the ability to pay to pick up cards that have been discarded makes it such that you can usually find an answer to your current predicament. I'd love to try it again with different factions.
Session – Majesty: For The Realm
Game: Majesty: For The Realm
Designer: Marc André
Players: 2 – 4 Players
Playing Time: 30 – 40 minutes (This Play: 25 minutes x2)
Main Mechanisms: Card Drafting, Set Collection
Player(s):
We only had about 45 minutes left so I pulled out Majesty: For The Realm. For the first time, I finally got the setup correct and added the set aside cards to the top of the draw deck instead of setting it aside into the game box.
We played with the B side for the first time and got absolutely bashed by Sean's Knights and we realized that the B side is a lot more aggressive. Even your injured citizens –VP at a higher rate than the A side. It was all I could do to plant Millers (or is it Milleresses?) as fodder to blunt Sean's Knights.
Our second game, we switched to a A / B / A / B layout for the cities and Sean started hoarding Brewers once he managed to grab 1 Innkeeper & 1 Noble which gave him at least +10VPs each time he grabbed a Brewer! I couldn't grab a Noble and Gideon couldn't grab an Innkeeper making Brewers next to useless to us if we tried to hate draft Sean.
Results Of Game(s)
WINNER – Sean (240 VPs)
2nd – Gideon (181 VPs)
LAST – Justin (124 VPs)
WINNER – Sean (235 VPs)
2nd – Justin (200 VPs)
LAST – Gideon (189 VPs)
Thanks for coming out everyone! I didn't win any game today but I had lots of fun! Big thank you to Sean for bringing his copy of Enchanters: Overlords.
Until next time, keep calm and play better.
